Yes, I do darn socks that get a hole...I have my MIL's darning egg...I don't know if it the socks these days, but I seem to have many pairs that have gotten holes along the side where the turning for the heel is....sometimes very shortly after boughten...once darned, they seem to last a long time, so to me it is definitely worth it!
I find that also like its where they start or stop on the factory machine.
