Start with the smallest ones. Sew together matching the widest ends.
I'm pretty sure you match the NARROW ends, not the wide ends. I've made three of these so far, and that's what I did.

Thank you sew much for that correction. I talked to BusyGranny and she is matching the narrow ends. Ouch! That's what happens when I try to talk from memory. I'm so glad that you mentioned that here. I'm also glad that BusyGranny looked at the pattern before she started sewing. I made two of these runners and they came out real good. I just spoke without checking first.
