Wow, what a coincidence. I was just searching the internet for information on the Hidden Wells quilt. Where it was mentioned, the internet instructions did say to use an odd number of fabrics and 5 or 7 seemed to be the most favored numbers.
With that said, I vote for #2 above. However, it is your quilt and you should go with the one that is most pleasing to your eye. I will have to explore the program you are using. Much cheaper to scan the fabric and test the pattern with actual fabric before making the quilt and deciding that you don't like it at all. Good luck.
