I have a 20 yr. old Kenmore that I FMQ on, I put on the embroidery foot and drop the feed dogs.
The key is the speed and stitch length so practice practice practice to see which works best for you. For me it's a fast speed and around a 2.8 stitch length. If your stitches are looping on the bottom, you are either going too fast or too slow for the stitch length you have chosen.
I bought a piece of prequilted fabric from the remnant bin - it's already got the batting in the middle - and I use that to practice using bright contrasting thread.
I also use a Free Motion Slider (you need a table or bed on your machine to use a slider) and I bought a Quilt Halo which I am finally getting the hang of using.
