There is a pattern called 4 Patch Posey, it's one that the repeats are matched into 4 layers before cutting and sewing. It is much simpler to piece than the 6 or 8 layers. And depending on the material still has lots of pizazz.
Good luck with whatever anyone chooses, but I think for a beginner the 4 patch is much easier and save the more difficult ones for later.
But again that's up to the individual.
