I think you mean not to make a template at all, the answers so far seem to think you want to use a fabric template. I think what you are suggesting is to mark the fabric much like the ones you can buy by Benatex which I have used and cannot see why doing the same yourself wouldn't work... perhaps it depends on the design. Why don't you try a sample? I think it may work and will try it myself.
