Thanks...my bf bought me one years ago in a mall kiosk & it was quite pricey (and it didn't have a removal/washable cover)...since then, made my own. I've also used rice, but like the weight of the rice.
You can put stuff in them (lavendar, herbs, oils, etc.) however, i've only done that in mine as I never know if others have allergies. There's TONS of patterns/formulas and ideas online for them...I kind of just adapted for what worked for me to do.
There's even a free pattern for an adorable lil eye pillow one with a case by Amy Butler (it uses a smaller grain - flax I believe...because it's smaller).
