I know what you mean. lol My husband was telling his friends at work (that don't know me) he purchased a sewing machine as my christmas gift, and they said (knowing his age 33) How old is your wife? lol :)
My husband bought me a sewing machine for our first Christmas as a married couple. After almost eleven years of marriage, I now have five machines (gave away the one he bought me because it was a dud) and thousands of yards of fabric. I am 37 and have been quilting since I was a teenager.
Nobody in my family quilts except me. My mom is a phenomenal muralist who does these massive works of art (many at the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy) and my sister is a musician and a graphic artist, so I needed to have my own outlet for creativity that did not compete with them. My dad was an engineer and I take after him with the left brain, so I like the logical mathematical aspect of quilting as much as the creative side I got from my mom.
