I no longer have the problem associated with question #1. I keep a large square gift bag (bag large enough to hold quilt) next to me at the sewing machine and all I have to do is turn towards the bag and clip threads. The reason this works is those gift bags have reinforcement that keep them wide open.
In regards to question 2... yes, I'm guilty as charged! When I'm on a quilting/sewing jag I don't want to stop to clean, so I leave things to clean up after I'm finished with the project. I see it as a positive habit because otherwise my sewing room would never get clean!
