Try it with 2 five inch squares.
Put them right sides together ... stitch 1/4" seam allowance all around the perimeter ...
Cut across each diagonal. Results: four HSTs

The reason I say try it with two five inch squares is because I can't figure out the math to know what size the HST actually turn out. Maybe you can do it and come back and tell us what the formula/results are <wave>
