Pat, I used a custom layout, just started with a blank slate. Very convenient to use the toolbar and set the size of a block by inches instead of trying to Shift+drag to the exact size I wanted.
I finally figured out that I had to remove the stars from Layer 1 and put them on Layer 2 to make it look right. Because I had to enlarge the quilt overall by adding borders (otherwise it really messed up the design by enlarging the center), the borders were all screwed up and it looked like the only way to get the stars in was to applique them onto the border.
I tried to get the size of the corner stars to match the border width after messing with it over and over, finally gave up and stuck in extra strips just on the design to make the borders 10". Since I just wanted blank strips I created and saved a blank block and did a Shift+drag to make the strips. I would actually do them in one piece though.
Don't know if that makes sense but if you've done a custom layout, you probably know what I mean.
