i usually will wash a quilt before i give it back. The ones that i've finished have been returned to people who will look at it, and it's not going to get the "abuse" of a child.
When i wash, i will use a delicate cycle cold water and let it air dry. I try to do that in the summer when i can lay the quilt on the back porch and dry outside. I haven't made a place in the basement yet.
