Aside from making sure she is seating the needle properly, she needs to make sure that the foot she is using accommodates the needle for the stitch she has selected. Before sewing, she should hand crank the needle down and make sure it passes through the opening in the foot. She could be trying to do a zigzag stitch with a zipper foot, for example.
