I know you already decided to go without the ring...I like the ring, and after seeing the inspiration picture, I think it would be awesome in a lighter color, brown, maybe, with the leaves spilling out onto it....my first thought was to make the ring of leaves by themselves...
I just like "frames"...to me they complete the project.
