fold the fabric with a nice straight fold then turn it sideways and cut off the salvages (straightening the top edge) then use the folded edge as your straight edge and cut your strips. the V's and bows occur when the fold is off-grain.
I have always thought this made more sense because the salvages aren't usually square. But, I thought I should do it by the directions I got in Fons and Porter. They are the first source I used for learning to quilt. Now this forum is the first source I use. Thanks, again.
