I was lucky enough to get a vanishing design wall for Christmas and have just hung it. It is beautiful. We finished it ourselves and then added a little decoration. It works like a dream. Having gotten one I think it would be very possible to make one fairly easily. The hardest part would be the roller hardware and I think that is available in stores that sell blinds. Add a dowel and the fannel and build a little shelf-like valence and you have it. I don't think it would cost much to make from scratch. Best of luck.
