It seems like about 90% of the ones that I quilt are old vintage tops that someone has that their grandmother made, etc. Most of those were hand-pieced as well. I've found that it's better to "float" the bottom of the top rather than pin and stretch the top since the stretching can pull at the seams and stress the hand-stitching. Also, the older tops can be a challenge, since there's usually little that is square about them. But I really like quilting them and bringing that quilt maker's original vision to finality with a finished quilt. To me it just seems a shame that a top they made sits in a drawer somewhere rather than being the quilt that they intended.
