It depends on how much you want the quilting thread to show. The 40wt threads show more then the 50 or 60wt threads, but if you are doing micro work, you want 60-100wt so you can get your stitch lines close together without them running together like a 40 or 30wt thread would. I like 50wt for piecing because it is thin enough not to bulk up the seams but strong enough to hold together well.
