I used to use freezer paper foundations for my scraps but it's a pain to remove. These days I back with batting squares. A fellow guild member backs hers with cheap (washed) muslin.
that is how my avatar quilt was created. When we had thirty five of the blocks completed, we used 2.5" strips for the sashing ... the foundation-pieced strip blocks were not a problem. here is a bigger picture for your perusal
