Check for classes at your local quilt shop (usually abbreviated as LQS), check to see if your area has a quilt guild, go to the library and look for books on beginning quilting.
If you really want to start right and become a good quilter Harriet and Carrie Hargrave have started a series of books entitled Quilter's Academy. It starts from the basics and you build your skills like stepping stones. It is very thorough and will save you from mistakes.
