We (my quilty friends and I) have found no difference between spraying the backing and top or spraying the batting. See my reply to CraftyGardenMom that I just posted.
I am really humbled by all the attention this quilt and posting has gotten. So glad some have been encouraged to try the spray basting. It sure has saved my knees and back, not to mention how much easier it is to quilt, and with better results.
