the corner of any
square ruler is 90*. so if you lay one edge on a straight line, the other "leg" of the corner gives you the 90* angle. all you have to do is draw a line against that second leg, crossing the first line, and you form a cross, with 4 - 90* angles coming together in the center. just make sure that everything goes right across that center hole.
i don't mind spending money for notions that i know i'll be using many times, but this isn't one of them. every time i made a dresden plate it had a different number of petals, so after the first template, i started making my own.
