i've always thought that the gathered side was the top but I must admit you can see the fabric much better from the other side. good question, maybe some one will tell us.
This interesting. It seems to me that either side would be acceptable -- and it's YOUR quilt.

I do have a question (please pardon my ignorance {{blush}}). Others have mentioned backing. Just how would one go about attaching a backing to the yo-yos; and would it be quilted in any way?
I would use a contrasting sheet - then lay the yo-yo quilt face down on a table or whatever - take a needle & thread and tack EACH yo-yo to the sheet which would be the back side after you've finished. Don't know how I would finish the edges - maybe turn under and hand stitch all around the outside??
