There is usually help available in the Library, and perhaps you have a "free" local paper like The Shopper or Thrifty Nickle. You might place a small ad for anyone to help a new quilter. But stand back....cause most quilters love to get someone else hooked and you will be amazed at how much help is offered.
The guilds I belong to welcome newbies. You might also ask at local fabric stores about groups in your area.
