I just did a fairly scrappy d9p using 5" squares. If I did another I would pay more attention to which squares went where. In other words, which ones went in the corners and didn't get cut. IMHO I'd try for identifying lights and darks, then pick one or the other for the corners and stick with one color/fabric/value for the centers. I haven't done it yet, that's just what I'd try :-) d9p blocks are so fun and forgiving you just can't really go wrong, don't you thiink? Good luck!
