Similar to UpNorth's one, I am attaching a picture of one my dh made for me, and one for my daughter. It is just a wooden flat base with a wooden dowel screwed into it. There is an eye hook on top to bring the thread up into, then across to your sewing machine. It works great for my large 5,000 yard cones for machine embroidery, and actually for anything I sew. I use it on all my machines, in fact I need another one for my quilting machine.
