I did one that was flannel on the bottom and middle, but used straight cotton on the top. I cut my fringe about 1/2-3/4" apart and carried on. After a couple of washes, it blossomed beautifully. Yes the cotton does not blossom like the flannel, but, by fringing it smaller as opposed to the 1" apart, it worked out well.
