I've seen a quilt like that on display somewhere and it was beautiful. It looked like they had just taken a large piece of "scenery" fabric (it was a winter scene), cut it into 9 equal size pieces and then put it back together with a 2-inch sashing between all pieces and a border to match the sashing.
