no, not all of us do this...i made my first quilt in 1976...over the years i have pre=washed fabric, on occassion...i decide by the fabric itself. Batiks tend to bleed, if i am using them in a quilt with any other fabric i pre-wash them and make sure they are not going to bleed. if i am using all batiks and they are all similar in color i don't worry about it. if it is red, i color test; if the fabric feels--weird--or has an odor...i prewash; but 95% of the time i do not pre=wash ... and have made some pretty good quilts. i do always wash my finished quilts as soon as the binding is on. i wash them and dry them in my machines if they fit, i go to the laundramat for bigger machines if they are too big for mine. they come out so soft and fluffy! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I am going to start small and see if this is something I can really do and really enjoy. I'm going to make some potholders, then graduate to placemats and then go for it if all goes well.

I have a very elementary question, I'm sure, so I need help. Some of the reading I have done says to wash my fabric the minute I bring it home from the shop and then iron. Is this required? Do all of you do this? Thanks for the feedback.
