Millie, I have not tried that, but some people do. It's called "quilt as you go" or QAYG. If you do a search on this site you will turn up a lot of pictures and discussion on that topic. As I understand it, most of the time the blocks are lined up and zig-zagged together, and then the sashing strips are sewn on both sides to cover the joins. There is probably more than one way to do it. Youtube may have videos demonstrating it. I know I watched one somewhere not long ago. I hope you post a picture of your quilt.
