You just aren't looking at it right. I like it. It probably wouldn't win a ribbon, but I just bet if you qult it and lay it on the couch, it will become a favorite snuggle quilt. If you don't already machine quilt, it would be a good one to practice on. Don't be too hard on yourself. Give it a chance. Sometimes quilting actually brings them to life. Any of my sons would be proud to have it.
