So sorry this happened to you with a new machine. How frustrating! This happened to me with another machine, not a Janome. I fixed it myself by removing the housing and finding a pin stuck in the gear. I would suggest you not do anything and take it back the way it is and get another new one or the assurance it was something simple and no damage occurred.
