OKAY... all yall... listen up!!! I went to my MIL's today. And she told me that she had a "flip up", an old green singer, a 99K in a cabinet that she scraped the paint off of, a 15-91, and a 'few more'.
Here's what she really had: a 'flip up' was a pristine two tone 301-A with attachments, in it's grass mat case. Not quite Minty. She told me she paid, $16 for it. Some wear on the case, and sharpie marker writing. The machine looks fine, except for a small wear spot on the tan coat where the case was rubbing the machine. NICE. I WANT IT.
Her 99k, she had in a plain 'farmer' table, previous owner had painted it dark brown. She scraped all the paint off... yuck. Machine had the pot motor. She had taken it to a flea market to sell. I saw that she marked it, $97 dollars! ( ). MIL said that a woman offered her $40 for and she replied "no way!" (MIL paid $25 for it at a thrift shop). Uh huh.
I told my DMIL, that the 99K wasn't a big ticket collectors item, that $40 was probably a bit high, and that the cabinet she couldn't get $5 for. SHE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH ME...
The 'green' machine was a 185J or something like that, peeling, not a happy machine. Old white plastic case, now yellowed. YUCK.
She dug out the "15-91". She swore up and down that that was what it was. I looked at the black leatherette case and said... "Mom, I can tell by the case it's not a 15-91. Let's get her out and open it up. As I expected, I opened it up and pulled out a BEAUTIFUL black 221 FW! I told her what it was, but she wasn't believing me. I told her the model number.... but she said, "But the book says..." (She had put an old 15-91 manual in with the machine.) She kept looking at me sideways, like I was pulling a fast one on her. There were attachments (that might not be the right ones), no manual, cord/plug in great shape. Had it's bobbin case in it. Very minor wear to decal in one spot only. MINTY. NICE. I REALLY WANT IT.
The rest of the machines were garbage singers. She must have had about 10 of them! I kid you not. She's got little plastic bags of singer attachments all stuck in the machines. She had straight needle attachments in with the slant, and I don't know what all with everything else. I gave up trying to figure it all out.
Okay...so remember how I told you she'd 'drive a hard bargain?' lol So at the end of my visit, I told her the truth about her FW and the others, what the going 'rates' were on them all. (I SHOULD have told her... oh yeah, I'll BUY that 15-91 from you for $49 like you wanted for the other!!! But NO, I was truthful!) I told her that I'd love to buy the FW and the 301 from her if she wanted to see them go to a good home. I did not even ASK that she should gift them to me. I'm the DIL, not the D.. so I know better. lol. She said, "well...
maybe the 301. I don't want to sell the other."
grrr. lol. So I left... I still don't know if I'll get the slant from her or not. My guess is not. I'll never get that FW. She says she wants to give a machine to her granddaughter.... later on. I'd bet it will be that one.
Well... that's my sad report....
