That's what I do, but I also put things for specific projects together, as I have used fabrics that I planned on one thing in another before I got back to the first. I also have a drawer for fabrics that have been given to me for charity projects, lest I forget and use them inappropriately.
I don't keep things on shelves, where they might be light streaked, but we each must fit our stashes into our living space in ways that work for us.
