I just saw what your mother taught you. I used to do that all the time but I have improved my stitches to a quicker method similar to the ladder stitch method. I even finish off the thread the same way, great minds think alike.
I use that stitch when ever I need to repair seams,dolls cloth bodies or any toy for that matter. I repaired a quilt some one had done and that the stitches had come out. My stitches were so small people thought it was done my machine not hand.
