I do the same as a few others - I just pull up the bobbin thread and do quite a few stitches real close together going away from the direction I will sew in, then back over the top in the direction that I want the design to go in.

I've never had any problem with quilting coming unsewn even in the washer and this is a lot faster than the knotting and hiding with the side-threading needles.
