I love to do cross stitch but I never heard it called "outlining". All my patterns call it "back stitching". I don't like to do the back stitching but I know it makes the cross stitch work really pop out so I usually do it as I finish an area and then go on to the next one. That way when I get finished I have most of it already finished.
