You could get some software to try out the hexagons first before you cut into it. If you have EQ7, you can manipulate the image to show kaleidoscopes like in a OBW. To get the image into EQ7, you can scan the fabric and go from there, or you could use a photo you already have. It's easy and fun--and would give you an excellent idea of what you would have without cutting!
