I don't think a panel is funky at all. My newest GS got one upon his arrival (during Christmas) and I think I put just as much work into it as I would have a "real" quilt. Besides, as others have said, it was for your GS not his mom and since you picked his best bud (Tomater), I'm sure he will LOVE it! If he is anything like my GSs, just 'cause Gramma made it is special enough!
