I believe Aurifil thread is a finer guage thread. Wonderful for sewing, especially in the bobbin because you can get a lot of thread on the bobbin and therefore don't have to fill them quite as often. I don't think I'd want to use it for handquilting unless it was something that was very soft and fine. It is wonderful thread in my experience, but I want my handquilting to show. It may also come in different sizes, but that I've used is finer. That would be my reason for choosing something different.
