I get an idea in my head and usually pull out the graph paper. I have gotten an idea when in bed and gotten up to put the thought on paper.
I also have to find some paper and jot something down or draw a quick diagram or sketch when I think of it, or it's lost... Then later, when I need a quilt idea, I can go back through those sketches.
