Not a bad idea if you have to prewash. If you sew with a small enough seam allowance, you could just trim it all off when it comes out of the dryer. So you lose 1/4", not a big deal. You'd probably lose the same amount if you serged around the edges.

Of course, I never prewash so it's not an issue. ;)
