If I understand your problem correctly, the cutting guide has a black dot that you line the metal gauge to for the size of the cut you want. After you make the first cut you line the gauge itself to the edge after each cut. Oh... I am so bad at explaining, I hope this helps. You should watch thier video a few times and see if that will help with your problem.
