Hi All! I have lurked here for many months. Time to come out of the shadows!

I am almost 60, retired from a career as a lawyer and a nonprofit executive director. My husband and I were lucky enough to retire early to our lake place, so we're on water and in the woods of beautiful NW Wisconsin.

My grandmother was a seamstress and quilter, and taught all her 5 daughters to sew, and they taught me. I have made small fabric items for gifts for years, now trying to get serious (but not too serious) about quilting. I am working on a queen size for our bed. Have fabric for a wall hanging, and a lifetime's stash of leftovers. Since almost no one else in my generation in our family sews, everyone thinks that anything I make is just amazing -- and I encourage them to think that!

Our son is 32 and a police officer in Minneapolis. He absolutely loves his job. Our daughter just turned 31 and is about to go to Haiti on her first field assignment with the UN. She will be working with the UN Peacekeeping force there. She has been working hard for several years to get into the UN ranks, and is thrilled with this opportunity.

Both of their jobs are exciting but scary! How did we do that?

I have already learned so much here -- I am grateful to have found all of you.
