Spray basting is faster. It saves time and my back and knees.
I use whatever brand is on sale. Yes, it stinks, yes it can make a mess. So I'm careful not to breathe it any longer than necessary, and not to overspray. I don't notice any difference on the needle when sewing. It washes out of your quilt in the first wash. And if you overspray, a little soap and water is good for your sewing room, every so often anyway.

If you don't plan to wash your quilt.... I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you should hand baste? I like to wash my quilts as soon as they are quilted.
