A 301 is no better at FMQ than a 403. The 301 may be a tiny bit better at piecing because it has no zigag, therefore the needle hole is smaller and fabric doesn't get eaten when you start those first few stitches. Millions of us have quilted with zigzag machines with no problem. You can also buy a small holed plate for most machines.

Thanks! Must be another model that was suggested & I had a part-time blonde moment. Will stop searching for a 301, look thru my notes & figure out what I should be looking for. :)
And yes - there is a small holed plate - didn't know that the zig zag plate was what was causing the problem those first few stitches. Will have to change that out when I am doing piecing work.
