I would never trust the adhesive on FRE or FR boxes. I always reinforce with my tape. Esp. if you are putting something "not flat" in the envelope, it is hard to press against the glue strip all the way.
I leave the adhesive cover strip on, fold the flap and hold it in place while slowly pulling the cover strip out from under the flap. It has worked every time!
I can relate to sitting on the box to tape it shut! It's amazing what you can stuff into a box! :)
