I have zippered headers but sewed the zippers about 3" from the edges. I cut off a 3" strip from my headers before I installed them. Finished the edges of the cuts, sewed the sleeping bag size zippers in then installed the headers on the rollers. One for the bottom edge of the top, one on each end of the backing.
I use one pin for each, placing that pin at a measured distance from the corner of the quilt piece to be basted so the edges line up when rolled up. Always sew from the same side of your quilt. I do sew with my old Pfaff piecing machine which has the built-in walking foot. Just lengthen the stitch for basting. Quick as a wink!
I just do not pin baste anymore.
