Get this: the quilt shop owner is a sort-of friend of mine - I've known her a little bit for a long time. She tends to make fun of my "matchy-matchy" ways. THis quilt is symetrical. Of course it is! Why wouldn't it be? She insists I need to "let go". Why? I know she's teasing, but after I left it ... bothered me just a bit. I keep looking at it wondering how I could have put it together differently. The sample in the shop has the strips in order - white, yellow, pink, blue, white, yellow pink - around the novelty print. Looks great, but ... quilt police shouldn't live in the quilt shop. I know she meant absolutely nothing by it - she was busy and just acknowleding I was there. I would not make a good shop owner - too sensitive to such things, I guess.
The quilt is lovely just as it is. Perhaps the shop owner was just putting a challenge out to you to explore a more assymetrical method. (I am also very matchy-matchy) I've gone outside the box a few times and it's not so bad. You may be surprised at what you could create alongside your matchy-matchy projects. You don't have to give up one style to explore the other.
