The formula according to Ceil is:
The size of your beginning square 5" minus .5 times 1.4 minus .5
So 5 -.5 = 4.5
4.5 x 1.4 = 6.3
6.3 - .5 = 5.8 the size of your unfinished block
5.8 - .5 seam allowance = 5.3 the size of your finished block.
This is the sew around the edge method and the sizes come out a little different than just regular blocks.
It won't matter as long as ALL your blocks are the same size.
I am starting with 8" squares so mine would be:
8 - .5 x 1.4 - .5 = 10" then take off the seam allowance and I will have 9.5" blocks sewn together.
